Dr. Olabisi Flora Davies-Bolorunduro is a researcher, educator, and award-winning entrepreneur who has also made contributions to genomics, microbiology, and infectious diseases research.
Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro currently serves as Executive Director and Senior Research Fellow at the Floret Center for Advanced Genomics and Bioinformatics Research. In this role, she provides strategic leadership, oversees cutting-edge research programs, and mentors the next generation of African scientists through the Floret Emerging Scientist Internship Program (FESIP).
Her career highlights include a predoctoral research stint at the Department of Chemistry, Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA, where she explored the drug-discovery potential of actinomycetes from the Lagos Lagoon. Prior to her doctoral studies, she served at the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) under the Federal Ministry of Environment in Nigeria and also worked in the ministry’s Pollution Control and Environmental Health Department. She completed her mandatory national service at the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), gaining expertise in agricultural microbiology and food safety and security.
While pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Lagos, Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro held temporary roles at the university’s Distance Learning Institute and as a laboratory coursework instructor in the Department of Microbiology. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone in 2012 when she won a ₦10,000,000 (approximately $63,000 at the time) seed grant in the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN) Competition for her innovative food security concept.
Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Lagos, as well as Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Microbiology (Food and Industrial) from the University of Ilorin. She previously served as a Visiting Researcher under the international postdoctoral program at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. She completed a postdoctoral program in the Department of Chemistry at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya, Indonesia. She was also a Research Fellow at the Center for Tuberculosis Research at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), where her work focused on antimicrobial resistance, microbial genomics, and natural product discovery.
As a reviewing editor for esteemed journals such as Letters in Applied Microbiology, Journal of Applied Microbiology, Biology Open and Vaccine: X. Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro contributes significantly to global scientific discourse. Her exceptional achievements have earned her grants and awards from organizations including Applied Microbiology International (AMI), the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, and The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases.
