Floret Center’s Executive Director Facilitates UNILAG Bioinformatics Training Workshop

Strengthening Computational Capacity for Tuberculosis Genomics, Antimicrobial Resistance Profiling, and Sequence Data Analysis

Lagos, Nigeria, 28 July 2026

Dr. Olabisi Davies-Bolorunduro, Executive Director and Director of Research at the Floret Center for Advanced Genomics & Bioinformatics Research, served as an invited facilitator at a One-Day Bioinformatics Training Workshop hosted by the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos (UNILAG), held on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, at the Boardroom, Faculty of Life Sciences, UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos.

The workshop was sponsored by the Biocodex Microbiota Foundation under its Henri Boulard Award, 2025, and convened by Professor Solayide A. Adesida of the Department of Microbiology. It brought together postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and laboratory scientists with beginner to intermediate experience in bioinformatics, all seeking to build stronger computational capacity for tackling tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance in Nigeria.

“Detecting Antimicrobial Resistance Genes: A Mycobacterium tuberculosis Case Study,” Lecture and Hands-on Practical

Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro was invited in recognition of her expertise to facilitate this session, guiding participants through a practical, hands-on exploration of genome sequencing, bioinformatics workflows, and antimicrobial resistance detection using real tuberculosis case data.

Skills Covered at the Workshop

  • Genome sequencing, from data to insight
  • Bioinformatics analysis tools, workflows, and interpretation
  • Antimicrobial resistance detection and profiling
  • Building skills and empowering the next generation of researchers

The invitation carried special significance for Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro, who earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos. Returning to facilitate this workshop marked a full-circle moment, reflecting the department’s continued role in shaping her research career and her ongoing commitment to giving back to the institution that trained her.

Speaking on her participation, Dr. Davies-Bolorunduro emphasised the importance of equipping the next generation of Nigerian researchers with genomics and bioinformatics skills to strengthen local capacity for disease surveillance and antimicrobial resistance detection, a priority closely aligned with the Floret Center’s mission of advancing genomics research and capacity building across the region.

The Floret Center for Advanced Genomics and Bioinformatics Research congratulates the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos, and the Biocodex Microbiota Foundation for organising this timely and impactful capacity-building initiative, and looks forward to continued collaboration on future training programmes.
